Rusalka Is One Of The Finest Works In The Romantic Operatic Oeuvre

Most of the time in the opera world, the same perhaps 50 venerable classics are performed over and over again. They are great works, and it is worth hearing them every several years. But it is always a welcome treat to experience something different. In that spirit, Opera Colorado deserves credit for mounting its first-ever production of Antonín Dvorák’s “Rusalka,” which continues for two more performances this weekend at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

Although not exactly a rarity, this 1901 opera is not a staple either, in part because of weaknesses in the libretto, including an aimless second act and an ambiguous, unsatisfying conclusion. But more than redeeming it are some memorable characters, including a deliciously devious witch and a captivating, romantic score, brought evocatively to life by conductor Alexander Polianichko and the Colorado Symphony. Also working in its favor is the sheer pleasure of a fairy-tale romance, replete with water nymphs and woodland sprites, spiritedly portrayed in part by a group of local dancers, with choreography by Rachael Harding.rusalka opera

To conjure this fantasy world, stage director Eric Simonson called on the services of respected projection designer Wendall Harrington, who has created vibrant, kinetic environments with vivid, saturated colors. The imagery is projected not just onto the floor and back and side walls but also on a series of translucent strips that hang over the stage giving the overall effect a three-dimensional depth.Perhaps most impressive are the evocations of water, which shimmer, ripple and bend. At one point, the Prince sticks his hand into the imaginary stream on stage, and a ripple instantly spreads across the liquidy projection at rear.

Letting the projections play the main scenic role, Erhard Rom’s set is extremely basic, just a platform with a curving slit down the middle to evoke the stream, and Kärin Kopischke’s costumes are primarily designed to blend in.Simonson deserves kudos for bringing cohesion to these complex visual elements and pulling off one of the most technologically innovative productions that Opera Colorado has mounted. The only blemish on this staging is the problematic second act, which seems especially unfocused in this version. It is hard to know what to make of the stark, vaguely contemporary set that was weirdly incongruous to everything else.rusalka opera

With the exception of tenor August Amonov, the cast is superb. Hearing the stirring effect he achieves at times with certain soaring lines, it is understandable why this Mariinsky Theatre regular was chosen to portray the Prince. But he is stiff and a bit uncomfortable on stage, and his singing too often has a sameness to it.A wonderfully complete singer, mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook brings all the menace and zest one could ask for in the role of Jezibaba, the witch, and Stefan Szkafarowsky, with his rock-solid bass voice, offers an affecting take on Vodnik.

But the unequivocal star of this production is soprano Kelly Kaduce, a complete performer with a big, natural stage presence. She appears totally at home as Rusalka, investing the nymph who longs for love with both compelling vulnerability and strength. The role ideally suits Kaduce’s fetching, expressive voice, and she displays power, depth and flexibility across the entirety of her range.rusalka opera
